Some would say that pets, kids, and carpet is the worst combination possible. We’re here today to say: it’s actually not the worst combination and it is possible. The above combination is likely the most difficult question in the whole home improvement industry (not really, we made that up). It is definitely a question that every homeowner asks him/herself… which is why it’s time for an answer.
How to keep your carpet clean with a pet?
Dogs, cats, parrots, hamsters, lizards, frogs, fish, or snakes don’t matter because the question is how messy are they?
Well, almost all of the pets listed above aren’t that messy; except for the dogs. We love them, but they just don’t get it.
How about children? Often times your children may be worse of a culprit than your pet when it comes to messiness.
So how do you do it? How do you keep your carpet, your pets, your kids, and remain sane?
Vacuum: do it often
Pet hair can get stuck in between the carpet fibers and become lodged in collecting dust and grime. If left un-vacuumed for a prolonged period of time there will be thousands of dust and fur particles stuck in the carpet causing poor air quality for you and your family. Dust, dirt, and hair left un-removed from the carpet fibers will also make your carpet lose structure and appear worn and deformed much quicker than normal.
Deep Clean: at least once a year
Daily stains, wear, and use will wear out your carpet quickly. On top of a weekly vacuum, most carpet manufacturers recommend performing a deep clean on your carpet at least once a year.
What will this do?
Prevent your carpet from appearing crushed, dull, or discolored. After investing thousands of dollars in a brand new carpet what’s stopping you from spending $30 once a year to maintain it?
You canrent out a rug doctor for as low as $29per day from Home Depot, so go do it!
Remove Stains ASAP
Carpet is known for staining… that’s probably the only thing most people have against it. It happens every day: kids spill, pet’s destroyed, and you’re clumsy. One thing you’re not: lazy!
As soon as something is spilled clean it up and you’ll have no problem keeping your carpet in pristine condition. Here are a few household solutions you can use to remove stains from your carpet.
BRAKE CLEANER
Yes, Brake Cleaner. Perfect for those difficult food stains. Apply the cleaner to a cloth and gently apply to the stain area by dabbing and blotting. After the stain is removed rinse the area with warm water and vinegar solution.
WD40
For grease and oil stains. Spray the stained area and allow it to sit for at least 20 minutes. Afterward, blot the area with a rag and rinse well with warm soapy water or carpet cleaner.
CLUB SODA
Works wonders for urine removal as well as wine, coffee, and other colored liquids. Pour a small amount over the stain and after allowing it to sit for a few minutes blot out with a dry towel.
BAKING SODA
Effective when used right away. Works great at removing smells and disgusting stains. Before applying baking soda first wipe up as much of the stain as possible, then apply a generous amount of baking soda. Allow for the area to dry before vacuuming it all right up.
SALT
For those more colorful stains. Do this ASAP, while the area is still wet clean it up with a sponge/towel and water. Pour salt over the area and wait for 10-20 minutes. Vacuum everything up once dry.
Watch it: take preventative measures
If you know your dog will be coming inside from your backyard and treading through the living room it might be a good idea to place some rugs or mats to prevent dripping or mud stains.
Don’t walk around your freshly cleaned or vacuumed carpet in your dirty shoes after walking around outside.
Don’t let your kids eat on the carpet
Even placing mats next to door entryways will prevent harmful dirt and grime from entering your home which in turn will not only save your carpet but also your hardwood, upholstery, furniture, and many other surfaces.
Be cautious and creative, find those areas that are most prone to track in the elements and eliminate them to the best of your ability.
