Choosing Floors for a Damp Climate
Seattle’s humidity and constant rainfall make moisture worth planning for when you choose a floor, from the material itself to what goes underneath it.
Homze installs four types of flooring, from our Mohawk and Shaw selection or your own:
- Hardwood. Durable, elegant real wood, pre-finished from our selection. We let it acclimate before installation, and the estimate depends on square footage, wood species and finish.
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP). A cost-effective, stylish, waterproof option for kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms that see water.
- Laminate. An alternative to hardwood with easy maintenance, available in waterproof styles.
- Carpet. Stain-resistant carpet, including Shaw Pet Perfect+ for homes with pets, with help choosing the carpet and pad for durability and feel.
Moisture Protection Starts Below the Floor
Proper subfloor prep and moisture barriers help your floors last longer. We set realistic start and completion dates so the work disrupts your home as little as possible, then during installation we:
- Move the furniture out of the way.
- Tear out the old flooring, whether it’s carpet, laminate, hardwood, tile or vinyl, and haul it away.
- Inspect and prep the subfloor.
- Add a moisture barrier where it’s needed.
- Install the new floor and handle stairs, transitions and toilets.
- Clean up when the work is done.
Vinyl plank goes down as click-lock planks over a smooth, prepped subfloor.
Bring Your Own Flooring, or Choose Ours
You don’t have to buy materials from Homze. If you’ve already found the flooring you want, we’ll install it, and the work is still covered by our 12-month limited installation warranty. If you’d rather choose from our selection, we bring Mohawk and Shaw samples to your free in-home consultation.
Pricing Your Project
Installation is priced by square footage, flooring type and number of rooms. To measure, multiply each room’s length by its width, add the rooms together, then add about 10% for cuts and waste. Old floor removal can be added to the estimate. Materials are quoted separately, and at your consultation we can compare the cost of hardwood, laminate and vinyl plank side by side for your rooms.

Which Floors Handle Seattle’s Damp Climate?
Waterproof LVP and laminate are good choices for damp rooms, and we add a moisture barrier under any floor where it’s needed.
What Do You Do to the Subfloor?

How Do I Measure My Square Footage?
Multiply each room’s length by its width (a 10 × 10 ft room is 100 sq ft), add the rooms together, then add about 10% for cuts and waste.
Do You Remove the Old Flooring?
Yes. We tear out carpet, laminate, hardwood, tile and vinyl and haul it away. It’s priced as its own line on your estimate.
